24 books in 2024

In all my years of reading, I have never done a read as many books as in the year challenge (e.g. 23 books in 2023). As a mood reader, I always found it overwhelming. How could the books I picked to read at the end of one year be the same books I’d want to read in say June or October.

Honestly, I only started doing monthly TBRs so I had something regular to post each month alongside my wrap ups. I didn’t realize how much I’d end up enjoying them. I like having an idea of the things I’m excited to read and picking out my next read doesn’t feel as overwhelming as it once did.

All that being said, I’m finally giving in and joining the bandwagon. I talk more about how I picked which books I’m going to read in this video.

Now what you’ve been waiting for: the 24 books I am going to read in 2024.

Historical Romance

At the start of 2023, I inherited what is essentially a plethora of old school historical romances from my grandma. I haven’t read any of them yet, but I’m making 2024 the year I start. At this rate I should finish reading all of them by 3024. A Lady by Midnight is the only one of the group that isn’t from my grandma. It’s the third book in the Spindle Cove series of which I loved the first two. I’m really pushing myself to finish off my unfinished series this year… we’ll see how that goes.

  1. A Lady by Midnight by Tessa Dare
  2. The Notorious Rake by Mary Balogh
  3. Memoirs of a Hoyden by Joan Smith
  4. Sweet Surrender by Catherine Coulter

Romance

Though they could be broken down into their own categories, I’m choosing to broadly refer to them as romance. The first two are recommendations from my irl (do people even say that anymore?) best friend who typically has pretty good taste (as long as I ignore her hatred of Addie LaRue). I’m also finally going to buddy read The Charm Offensive with Marvyn. It’s a queer reality tv dating show romance that I’ve been dying to read since I arc read Kiss Her Once For Me in August of 2022.

  1. Promises and Pomegranates by Sav R. Miller
  2. The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez
  3. The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun

Fantasy

Fantasy is intimidating. I love it so much, but it’s unbelievably difficult for me to start reading it. Nevertheless, at least a third of my physical TBR is fantasy. Breaking it down a bit more, three of these books are from either Fairyloot or Illumicrate. I’m the worst at reading books I get from subscription boxes… I don’t know why. I should be more excited to read the beautiful editions I have. Others were book club picks that I just never got around to at the time. I’m making 2024 the year I finally pick these up.

  1. We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
  2. Middlegame by Seanan Mcguire
  3. Jade City by Fonda Lee
  4. Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
  5. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
  6. The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid
  7. The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
  8. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
  9. Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
  10. Crimson Reign by Amélie Wen Zhao

Mystery/Thriller

I am a scaredy cat. Straight up I will refuse to hang out with friends if we are watching anything remotely terrifying. Though, I’ve found that I am an absolute sucker for anything with a gothic setting (e.g. Gallant), academic setting (e.g. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife and Truly Devious), or historical setting (e.g. Vampires of El Norte). Therefore, I added a couple that fit the bill of what I may like. I threw Breathless in because the mountain snow storm setting seems like the perfect thing to pick up during January or February when the weather in California finally decides it’s time to dip below the forties.

  1. The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova
  2. The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
  3. A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro
  4. Breathless by Amy McCulloch

Miscellaneous

Otherwise known as books that didn’t fit in the aforementioned categories. All three of these are books I’ve wanted to read since buying them months (maybe even years) ago – yikes. I’ve seen The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes be compared to Daisy Jones & The Six, and considering how much of my personality is made up of that book, I should’ve picked it up a while ago. We Are Okay and Kiss & Tell are both by YA authors whose previous works I adore. They might not fit in any of the above categories, but these are high priority.

  1. The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes by Elissa R. Sloan
  2. We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
  3. Kiss & Tell by Adib Khorram
